Loss of Am Afifi - valued member

On November 8th 2010, we were saddened by the loss of Am Afifi, good friend and faithful member of SWSA, who died after a courageous fight against cancer.

Am will be remembered for his positivity and his generosity, participating in most of SWSA’s social events and meetings over the past seven years. On several occasions he, and his wife Irena, invited us to their own home perched on the cliff-tops near to Teignmouth, sharing their splendidly landscaped Sculpture Garden, technical expertise and warm hospitality.

Am’s contributions to SWSA exhibitions and local Teignbridge ventures such as "The Art Farm Projects" and "Trail" (Sculptured Art from recycled materials) were unfailingly vibrant and original, addressing social and environmental issues and his passion for "Amnesty International". In recent years he will be remembered for his exhibits at Dartington and the Totnes Ariel Centre , with humorously poignant references to his own deteriorating health within the NHS system.

His natural grasp of the French language, made him a vitally enthusiastic participant in the exchange exhibitions with Bretton Sculptors.

As publicity and Marketing representative of the group, his energy was unswerving despite faltering health. He embraced and celebrated the achievements of all SW Sculptor’s Members through his spicy, humorous and sometimes controversial appraisals of our work, features in various local newspapers.

Thank-you Am – we hope we can follow your examples of dynamism and bravery.
